A beginner’s guide to Battle Royale and Zero Build. The tips are our own recommendations; check official news for specific seasonal changes.

  1. 01 / CHOOSE

    Build or Zero Build?

Battle Royale: build your own cover. Zero Build: use the terrain and existing buildings.

    Compare modes
  2. 02 / PREPARE

    Know your controls

Check your bindings and sensitivity before you need them in a fight.

  3. 03 / PRACTISE

    One goal per match

Start by landing safely. Next, improve your equipment. Small goals make progress easier to notice.

GETTING STARTED

Same island.
Your playstyle.

The tips below are Link Guide’s recommendations. Gameplay basics reviewed: .

BUILD + FIGHT

Battle Royale

Build cover and learn to edit structures. Alongside movement and aiming, you will practise managing building materials.

Link Guide recommendsPractise placing one wall, one ramp and making a safe retreat first. Combine them under pressure once you feel comfortable.

Battle Royale at Epic (German)
COVER + MOVEMENT

Zero Build

Without building, existing cover, positioning and movement matter. Plan your route through the terrain and buildings before you move.

Link Guide recommendsChoose somewhere to retreat before you fire. Before leaving a safe position, identify your next piece of cover.

Zero Build at Fortnite (German)

New here? Try both. Play a few matches in each mode. Then decide whether you prefer building or using existing cover. You do not have to master one mode before trying the other.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST FIGHT

Your controls.
Your feel.

There is no setting that suits everyone. Menu layouts depend on your platform and input device.

KEYBOARD & MOUSE

Check your bindings first

Open the game menu, then select the cog to open Settings. Choose the arrow-key icon for keyboard bindings. Check the mouse settings too if you use a mouse. Find Jump, Interact, Reload, Switch Weapon and Place Marker.

Try it: Try each action once without time pressure. Pick keys you can reach without repeatedly moving your hand.

CONTROLLER

Keep your aim controlled

Select the controller icon in Settings. Test your look and aim sensitivity. Link Guide recommends changing one value at a time, then checking whether you can track a target steadily.

Your test: If you keep overshooting the target, try a lower sensitivity. Make small adjustments first.

PHONE & TABLET

Adjust your touch layout

Open your profile picture, then the three-line menu and the HUD Layout Tool. Use it to customise the touch interface. Afterwards, check that movement, looking around and important actions are comfortable to reach.

Before the match: Check that your selected mode and input device work together. Options in this guide do not change your Fortnite settings.

Official help (German): Change controls on PC and console ↗ · Adjust the touch interface ↗. If a setting is missing, check the mode selected in the lobby first. The practice suggestions are Link Guide’s recommendations.

LINK GUIDE RECOMMENDS

Four phases.
One clear plan.

Before each phase, check your position, equipment and next safe route.

Your practice plan0 of 4 checked
  1. Watch other players as you approach. For a calmer practice match, Link Guide recommends a place with clear routes and several ways to move on.

YOUR CHECKWhere can I find cover and equipment first?
  2. Choose weapons you can use confidently at different ranges. Leave space for healing and available utility items. Check how they work in the current game.

YOUR CHECKCan I fight, heal and retreat?
  3. Check the map and storm regularly. Plan your way to the next cover before time starts running out. A safer detour can be better than the shortest route across open ground.

YOUR CHECKWhere is my next safe stopping point?
  4. Reload in a safe position and keep healing ready. Fire deliberately: attacking can reveal your position. Keep your route into the next zone in mind.

YOUR CHECKWill this fight give me a better position?

The checkmarks are a personal practice aid. They do not change your Fortnite progress.

I get eliminated straight after landing.

Try this next: Watch the approach and choose a less contested spot. Find cover and usable equipment first. If someone lands before you, move away rather than fighting over the same weapon.

Go to the landing phase ↓
I get hit when crossing open ground.

Try this next: Before moving, decide where you will take cover again. Check the route and storm early. In build mode you can place cover; in Zero Build you need existing protection.

Compare the modes ↓
I lose track of my inventory.

Try this next: Give your equipment a purpose: a familiar weapon for your usual range, healing and an available utility item. Try unfamiliar items somewhere safe. Seasonal item names and effects can change.

Go to the equipment phase ↓
My team is fighting in different places.

Try this next: Mark a shared landing spot before jumping. Call out danger and retreats early. Agree on a meeting point instead of entering the next fight one by one.

SMALL CHANGE. CLEAR FOCUS.

Improvement
starts before the win.

Aim with a plan

Choose a sensitivity that lets you track targets steadily. Change one setting at a time and test it over several matches.

Stick together

Mark opponents and objectives. Agree on who moves first and who provides cover. A shared decision often helps more than four separate plans.

One question after each match

What went wrong first: positioning, a decision or execution? Choose just one thing to improve in your next match.

Your next practice match

  1. Prepare: Review your controls and choose one practice goal.
  2. Play: Use the four-phase plan. A safe retreat counts as a good decision too.
  3. Review: Note one thing that went well and one specific mistake. Work on just that mistake next match.

BEFORE YOUR NEXT MATCH

Start together.
Narrow down problems.

These four help topics were checked against the linked Epic instructions on . They supplement the playing tips; news retrieval remains separate.

The game feels delayed or will not connect.
  1. Check the Epic status page for an outage.
  2. Open Settings → Game → Language and Region → Matchmaking Region. Epic recommends Auto for the best connection; the millisecond values show latency to each region.
  3. Under Settings → Game UI, enable Net Debug Stats and apply. Network information appears at the top left.

Link Guide recommends: Note the region, time and displayed readings when the problem occurs. A different sensitivity will not fix network delay.

Set your region ↗ · Understand network details ↗

My progress is missing on another device.

Your platform accounts must be linked to the same active Epic account. First identify the account holding the progress you want to keep. Separate progress on different platforms cannot be merged. You can link one account of each platform type.

Link Guide recommends: Compare the linked accounts shown at Epic before changing anything. Avoid linking a newly created account by guesswork. Your guide checkboxes still belong to Link Guide and are not a Fortnite save.

Epic: use progress across devices ↗

Play together on one console.

On PlayStation or Xbox, connect a second controller in the lobby, select player 2’s console account and follow the instructions to link their Epic account. Guest accounts are not supported. Look for “Great for Local Multiplayer” in Discover or “Local Players” in Game Details.

Both players need the same language setting. Split-screen applies during matches; the lobby and submenus are not shared. Solos and Ranked are excluded; Epic’s instructions also exclude PC, mobile and Nintendo Switch.

Epic: local multiplayer and limitations ↗

I cannot hear my team.

Check the voice channel in the Social menu: Party Channel connects your Epic party; Game Channel connects teammates from other parties. Xbox or PlayStation party chat can block Fortnite voice chat. Also check volume, microphone input and Push-to-Talk.

For child accounts, consent and parental controls may restrict chat. Make changes with the responsible adult. Check Epic’s service status first if its voice services have an outage.

Link Guide recommends: Exchange a short sentence before take-off. Without voice, mark a shared landing spot and fallback position.

QUICK ANSWERS

Keep
moving forward.

What do loot, rotation and loadout mean?
Loot
Equipment and items you find during a match.
Loadout
The combination of equipment you carry.
Rotation
Your planned route to the next position or safe zone.
Endgame
The late stage of a match when little space remains.
Which mode is better for beginners?

You can start with either. Zero Build lets you focus on cover and movement without learning building actions. If you enjoy creating structures, start with Battle Royale and practise a few building actions deliberately.

Does this include current weapon rankings or quest solutions?

This section explains general basics. It does not provide a verified list of every active quest, seasonal weapon or item location. The official news below links to changes with their publication dates. For limited-time content, also check what the game currently shows.

How can I make sound effects visible?

Open Settings, select Audio and enable Visualize Sound Effects. Apply the change. A ring will show cues for certain sounds. Keep watching your surroundings as well.

Do my checkmarks sync with Epic?

Checkmarks stay in this browser on this device. They do not change your Fortnite progress or your Epic account. Clearing browser data can remove them. Reset clears only this practice checklist.
